Zach Johnston is a Los Angeles–based video artist and composer whose work blends elegance and fun. Raised in the raw energy of early 2000s skateboarding culture in the rural Midwest, he later developed a deep love for world cinema, fusing its refined sensibilities with the loose, punk ethos of skate culture and the sleek polish of fashion advertising.
Zach’s composing career began by chance — a serendipitous meeting with Pixar art director Dice Tsutsumi led to scoring The Dam Keeper, an Oscar-nominated short that launched a decade-long collaboration with Tsutsumi’s studio, Tonko House. He’s since scored the studio’s entire body of work, including the acclaimed Netflix miniseries Oni: Thunder God’s Tale.
Currently, Zach splits his professional life between video editing and commercial composing. Off the clock, he makes experimental music, designs his apartment, and lends his eye to friends’ projects. He also used to play in a band called Phox.
