Zach Johnston is a versatile creative professional — filmmaker, graphic designer, creative director, and musician — based in Los Angeles.

Freelance Videographer & Designer

After graduating from The International Academy of Design and Technology with a diploma in TV & Film Production, I spent a decade working as a freelance videographer, web designer, and art director. My clients included TV personalities, musicians, and small businesses. I lived and worked across Toronto, Chicago, San Francisco, Nashville, and Los Angeles. Along the way, I forged meaningful relationships, collaborated on exciting projects, and immersed myself in dynamic communities.

Phox

In 2012, I joined Phox, a six-piece indie pop band from my hometown of Baraboo, Wisconsin. As a member, I directed our music videos, short films, and web promotional content, including Confetti, our breakout video-song EP. We performed at major events like Coachella, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert, and Lollapalooza. Our music was featured in television shows like Transparent and NBC’s Parenthood, further expanding our reach.

Composer

In 2013, I scored my first short film, The Dam Keeper, which went on to be nominated for an Academy Award. Over the next decade, I partnered with my music collaborator Matteo Roberts to score the entire filmography of the Bay Area-based animation studio Tonko House, founded by former Pixar Art Directors Dice Tsutsumi and Robert Kondo. Our most notable project was Oni: Thunder God's Tale, a Netflix limited series that received high praise, including recognition from Guillermo del Toro, who awarded us the "Best Limited Series" title at the 2023 Annie Awards. Matteo and I were also nominated for "Best Music" at the same awards. We have also created music for  podcasts, video games, and apps.

Amsterdam Modern

My passion for furniture and interior design led me to join Amsterdam Modern, Los Angeles' largest Midcentury furniture dealer. As project manager in the warehouse, I’ve learned furniture repair, restoration, and refinishing, all while gaining valuable knowledge in the world of design.
